Fire Prevention Week
Fire Prevention Week is held annually in October. Check out this years theme, safety flyers and activities for the whole family.
Fire Prevention Week History
The Chicago Fire began on October 8, 1871 and killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres of land. The result of this fire was the creation and observance of Fire Prevention Week. In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed Fire Prevention Week a national observance. The NFPA runs the campaign on an annual basis, traditionally being held the week of October 9th in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire.
Who Participates in Fire Prevention Week
During Fire Prevention Week, children, adults, and teachers learn how to stay safe in case of a fire. Each year, the NFPA identifies a theme to help the community learn about fire safety. Firefighters provide lifesaving public education in an effort to drastically decrease casualties caused by fires during this week. The 2024 theme for Fire Prevention Week is “Smoke Alarms. Make them work for YOU.”
Fire Prevention Week Main Teaching Points
*Install smoke alarms in your home. Install them in every bedroom, every level of the home and in hallways outside of sleeping areas.
*Inspect your smoke alarms monthly, testing to ensure they are in good working condition. Change the battery in your smoke alarm every 10 years or with manufactures recommendations.
*Protect your family by practicing your home escape plan when the smoke alarm sounds. Establish a meeting place outside the home and ensure your family is familiar with the sound of your alarm.
