EXCELLENCE IN LAW ENFORCEMENT
An accreditation program has long been recognized as a means of maintaining the highest standards of professionalism. Accreditation is the certification by an independent reviewing authority that an entity has met specific requirements and prescribed standards. There are 164 standards in the 4th Edition TLEA (Tennessee Law Enforcement Association) Standards Manual. The accreditation is a 3 year cycle within which to build files and proofs of these standards.
Accreditation increases the cooperation and coordination with other law enforcement agencies and other branches of the criminal justice system. The accreditation process required an in-depth review of every aspect of the Nolensville Police Department. The department’s management, operations, and administration were reviewed in this process. This included:
1. Establishment of agency’s goals and objectives with provisions for periodic updating;
2. Re-evaluation of whether agency resources are being used in accord with agency goals, objectives, and mission;
3. Re-evaluation of agency policies and procedures, especially as documented in the agency’s written directive system;
4. Correction of internal deficiencies and inefficiencies before they become public problems;
5. The standards provide norms against which agency performance can be measured and monitored over time.
The benefits of accreditation are that the accreditation increases the Nolensville Police Department’s ability to prevent and control crime through more effective and efficient delivery of law enforcement services to our community. Accreditation enhances community understanding of the Nolensville Police Department and its role in the community as well as its goals and objectives. Citizen confidence in the policies and practices of the Nolensville Police Department is also increased. Accreditation, in conjunction with the philosophy of community policing, commits the Nolensville Police Department to a broad range of programs (such as crime prevention) that directly benefit its citizens and our community.
